Ocean Optics Contributes to Gulf Air Quality Monitoring in Wake of Deepwater Horizon Spill
HR2000 used in Argos portable UV DOAS air monitoring system
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, June 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Modular HR2000 spectrometers from Ocean Optics (www.OceanOptics.com), are enabling air quality monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico as part of Argos Scientific's portable UV DOAS air monitoring system. Argos Scientific is working in conjunction with Hillsborough County, Florida, to monitor the environmental impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The project has special significance to Ocean Optics as the company is located on the Gulf side of Florida and its community will be affected in coming months as the oil advances, upsetting both water and air quality.
The HR2000 High-resolution Miniature Fiber Optic Spectrometer is a small-footprint spectrometer that provides optical resolution to 0.035 nm (FWHM). The modular spectrometer design allows users to select optical bench options such as the detector, grating and entrance aperture (slit).
Argos custom-configured the HR2000 spectrometer used in its portable UV DOAS air monitoring system. In the Gulf, the system has already analyzed a number of environmental samples, containing a mixture of oil and sea water, from the spill area. Vapor analyzed from the samples indicate the presence of two gases with unique UV spectral features being emitted from the samples. The data from these initial investigations will be used to update the system's spectral libraries. A UV DOAS system has been set up in Mississippi for continuous monitoring, with real time data posted at: http://fenceline.org/test/map.php .
A second Argos system has been sent to the University of North Alabama, where a calibration and test facility has been established to accommodate future samples associated with the oil and dispersant material collected by community members in the Gulf area.

Memco Supplies its Elite Elevator Safety Systems to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi
Light curtains to be fitted to doors of 74 elevators in Terminal 3
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, June 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Global elevator safety and communications specialist Memco's Elite elevator safety systems are to be installed in 74 elevators at Indira Gandhi International Airport's new Terminal 3 in New Delhi, India. The systems will be fitted to elevator doors supplied by ThyssenKrupp Elevator. Memco is a Halma company and is represented in India by TL Jones, also a Halma company.
Photo: http://halmapr.com/memco/Elite_group.jpg (712 KB)
Memco's Elite safety system features two independent detection systems. The first is a light curtain of infra-red beams criss-crossing the elevator car's doors; the second is a 3D proximity detection system in the landing zone. Any person or large object breaking the light curtain or detected within the 3D zone triggers a system which automatically reopens the elevator doors.
The combined system consists of a transmitter detector (TX) and receiver detector (RX) mounted on the car doors. Each housed in a robust profile only 9.8mm wide, they automatically sense door separation and adjust themselves for optimum performance. In many installations a separate controller is unnecessary and the detectors can be connected directly to the door controller or elevator operator.
The Elite features the latest software as standard, including power reduction and timeout features, and can be fitted to virtually any new or existing elevators. This versatility makes it one of the most competitive and easy to use elevator safety systems on the market (more information can be found here: http://www.memco.co.uk/en/elite/674.html).
Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest airport in South Asia by traffic movements and passenger volume. It serves as the primary civilian aviation hub for the region and in 2007 it handled 23 million passengers, with a planned expansion programme increasing its capacity to handle 100 million passengers by 2030.
The new Terminal 3 building, expected to cost US$ 2.6 billion, will have the capacity to handle an additional 33 million passengers annually by the start of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in October. On completion it will be the third largest terminal in the world, after Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 and Beijing International Airport's Terminal 3.
It will be a two-tier building, the bottom floor being the arrivals area and the top being a departures area. It will have 168 check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, 72 immigration counters and 15 X-ray screening areas, along with duty-free shops and other features. Over 90% of passengers passing through the airport are expected to use this terminal when completed.

Labsphere's FS2 Flashlight Measurement System Meets ANSI Test Requirements
System measures properties of light output on LED, tungsten, xenon and krypton lamp assemblies
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, June 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- ANSI standard FL 1-2009, governing basic performance of hand-held/portable flashlights, spotlights, and headlamps providing directional lighting, is the first documented set of requirements for flashlight measurement. Labsphere's FS2 Spectral Flux Measurement System facilitates accurate spectroradiometric, photometric and colorimetric characterization within the testing guidelines for conditions, run time and light output measurement. Designed specifically for this application, these turnkey systems evaluate lamp efficiency for development and manufacture of LED, tungsten, xenon and krypton lamp assemblies.
Photo: http://halmapr.com/labsphere/FS2ANSI.jpg (640 KB)
The FS2 System's integrating sphere, coated with Labsphere's proprietary highly reflective diffuse Spectraflect®, delivers exceptional spatial integration, critical for the uniform, repeatable and reproducible measurements required by the new standards. The system provides lab conditions as specified in the standards, including the ability to calibrate showing traceability to NIST standards.
ANSI FL 1-2009 requires manufacturers to determine and report Run Time-the amount of time elapsed (under continuous operation) at which the device's light output reaches a level when users will commonly replace the batteries. The FS2's unique V-block sample holder ensures the device mates with the measurement port easily, the same way, every time, complying with the requirement that the device to sensor distance be identical for initial and end point measurements. The system software gathers periodic light measurements and records corresponding time values during the Run Time testing.
Labsphere's FS2 system determines Total Luminous Flux (Lumens) - the total quantity of emitted overall light energy as measured by integrating the entire angular output of the portable light source, as required by the ANSI standard. In addition, the system assesses Total Spectral Flux (Watts/nm), Total Radiant Flux (Watts), Colour (CCT), Lamp Performance vs. Time, Peak and Dominant Wavelength, Spectral Purity, Colour Rendering Index (CRI), Chromaticity Coordinates and Half-Bandwidth.
The system's MtrX-Flashlight measurement software provides a user-friendly, intuitive platform for calibrating the system and analyzing measurements. All measurement results are captured instantly with real time graphics and the ability to generate and export reports.
Labsphere's experienced engineering staff are able to specifically address the unique needs of each customer, designing a custom FS2 system for the type of flashlight application under study. For more information please contact Vikrant Mahajan, Labsphere's USA-based Applications Engineering Manager, on e-mail: vmahajan@labsphere.com or telephone: +1 603 927 4266 (extension 2198).

Crowcon's Vortex FP Flameproof Gas and Fire Detection Control Panel has ATEX Certification
ATEX certification allows use in Zone 1 and 2 hazardous areas
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, June 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Crowcon's highly successful Vortex range of multi-channel gas and fire detection control panels has been extended to include an ATEX* certified Exd Flameproof version, the Vortex FP, which can be used in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas.
Photo: http://www.halmapr.com/crowcon/Vortex.jpg (700 KB)
Capable of monitoring up to 12 gas detectors, the Vortex FP is also compatible with smoke/heat and flame detectors and up to three of its input channels can be used for fire detection. Each channel has one fault and three alarm levels which can be combined to trigger up to 32 output relays, allowing connection to a range of external alarms and safety devices such as fans or valves. Intrinsically safe (IS) safety barriers can also be incorporated for use with IS gas or fire detectors.
Sealed to IP65, the Vortex FP features simple push button operation and visual status indicators for each channel, ensuring that the system can be checked at a glance. Its display is also fitted with magnetic switches which enable the system to be interrogated or inhibited without opening the system enclosure.
For easy maintenance, the Vortex FP is modular in design so that replacement parts can be plugged in without the need for complex rewiring. It can be customised to meet all site requirements without the need for complex cabling and can also be reconfigured at any time by a PC using dedicated software. In addition, RS-485 Modbus communications allow for remote non-intrusive calibration and configuration.
Other variants of the Vortex include a standard wall-mounted control system; the Vortex Rack, a 19" rack-mounted system; and the Vortex Panel, for panel-mounting. Crowcon's engineers can advise on the Vortex configuration most suited to a particular application. The company's Project Engineering Team can also supply custom-built systems to match individual requirements.

Trimex Group Chairman Prasad Koneru said that the project has already generated significant opportunities in the region. "The Srikurmam project demonstrates that environmental sustainability, land conservation, and fast economic growth can coexist. Comment from Pradeep Koneru, Executive Director, Trimex Group
Trimex Group Executive Director Pradeep Koneru said that the Srikurmam project is an important milestone for the group and the minerals extraction industry.
"Our mission is to be among the world's largest producers of top quality industrial heavy minerals. We are confident that our fully-integrated multi-mineral separation and processing complex has few equals even among global peers in terms of ambition and quality," Pradeep Koneru said.
