Leadership and Learning are Indispensable to Each Other
Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Monday, April 19, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- The key to successful leadership is influence, not authority - was the key message at a thought provoking discussion at the Leadership Conclave organized by RV College of Engineering, Bangalore as part of their College Festival - 8th MILE. Leaders and entrepreneurs from diverse fields came together for a discussion on The Evolution of Leadership: What it will take to lead tomorrow. The panelists included:

Mohandas Pai said that leadership for tomorrow needs to be built keeping dynamics of new world order in mind. He added that Gandhi's model of globalization is relevant today since it advocates sustainable change at grassroots level. He added that the Gandhian philosophy of assimilation of all cultures, values and systems to create the one that suits one's context is a critical aspect for development in this day and age. He added that the leadership for future will need to keep in mind factors like trade barriers, ageing resources globally and technological developments.
Dr B.D Patel maintained that Indian mythology and spiritual wealth has much to offer to contemporary India. He highlighted the fact the characters depicted in Indian mythology and spiritual scriptures portrayed human nature and elements of a person's relationships with his context and environment. None of those characters were absolutely fallible or invincible. One can see shades of human behavior in them. The ones who had supreme powers or a high degree of capability were expected to display qualities of restrain, balance, concern for the weak and respect for everyone. The ones who disregarded this mantra stood to be disqualified from the social structure. Dr Patel also stressed upon the fact the true leadership inspires, engages and participates. He also added that an open mind is the prime condition for being in a leadership role.
Swamy Paramasukhananda said that leadership is a spiritual pursuit of taking average folks to the point of their highest potential and bringing out the intrinsic nature in oneself. He added that Spirituality is the highest point of awareness about life and it may lead us to different roles but it is all embodied in one life. He added that our spiritual character goes up as we reduce our ego desires. A strong spiritual character lays the foundation of a strong leader. Spiritual character is true power - the power that will be honored by others who see their own, pure selves reflected in you.
Dr Roger Busch added a strong perspective from the world of business and said that leadership is not about creating followers but creating leaders. He added that the best leaders motivate others through the quality of content and conversations. It is about aligning people toward common goals and empowering them to take the actions needed to reach them.
Laura A. Parkin discussed the role of entrepreneurs as leaders and as drivers of change. She added that the ability to inspire trust is a critical quality for entrepreneurs and leaders.
Rakesh Shukla said that leadership and learning are indispensable to each other. He added that developing a culture of student leadership, which releases the talents, energies and creativity of all learners who will become the decision-makers and leaders of the future is essential to usher in an era of change leaders for India. He added that there is no one particular way to be successful and the ability to work within a context and create relevant solutions and relationships is a hallmark of a good leader. He added that openness and transparency; passion for success and achievement, humility and a sense of personal responsibility are present in almost all forms of successful leadership.
