G R Vishwanath to Receive Castrol Lifetime Achievement Award


Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, September 14, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Gundappa Rangnath Viswanath, former Indian captain and the first Indian to score a Test hundred against all Test-playing nations of his time, is set to join a special club that includes the legendary Capt. Vijay Hazare, Polly Umrigar, B.S. Chandrasekhar, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Erapalli Prasanna.

The former India captain, who epitomized elegance and excellence on and off the cricket field, is to receive the CASTROL LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN CRICKET Award.

G R Viswanath represented India in 91 Tests from 1969 to 1983, and scored 6,080 runs, inclusive of fourteen centuries. Each of his hundreds was either match-winning or match-saving. Cricket-lovers in India and abroad will never forget his 139 against the West Indies at Kolkata in 1974-75, 112 against the same team at Port of Spain in 1975-76, and 114 v/s Australia at Melbourne, all of which helped set up famous victories.

The 'little genius' will receive the award which includes a trophy and a cheque for Rs. 5 lakhs at the annual CASTROL AWARDS FOR CRICKETING EXCELLENCE Ceremony, which will be held on 17th September 2009 in Mumbai .

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will receive the CASTROL JUNIOR CRICKETER OF THE YEAR Award. The left-handed all-rounder excelled himself in the 2008-09 edition of the Ranji Trophy, scoring 729 runs and taking 42 wickets with his left-arm spin for Saurashtra. He was in fact the highest wicket-taker in the competition, along with Mumbai's Dhawal Kulkarni. Jadeja will receive a trophy and cheque for Rs. 1 lakh

The CASTROL AWARDS FOR CRICKETING EXCELLENCE which have been given away for over a decade now, honour the yesterday, today and tomorrow of Indian cricket. Voting is on for the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year award which is decided by a two step process. In the first stage, the top five cricketers are shortlisted based on a points system. In the second stage, all past and present Indian cricketers vote for their choice of the Castrol Indian Cricketer of the Year. The winner of this Award will be announced at the Award Ceremony.

This year, there are a number of new awards which have also been instituted and these include:
