Lufthansa Student Website Guides Students on Support Systems at University

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Lufthansa Student Centre helps students manage the transition from school to university with helpful information on the support systems available on campus.

The move from high school education to under graduate studies is a big leap in a student's life. What a student is accustomed to doing at school to succeed academically, changes greatly upon entering university. In larger universities, there is very little student-teacher interaction and this can be quite overwhelming for someone recently out of a school system where there is constant guidance by the teacher.

However, all universities hold the success of their students in high regard and make great efforts in ensuring that all their students have what it takes to succeed. There exists a well-established support system at universities where students are provided with ample resources pertaining to 'study skills.' However, rather than making it mandatory, it is left entirely at the student's discretion, whether or not to opt for this support system.

'Study skills' covers a wide range of topics, each customised to a specific set of challenges that a student might face in making the transition into university.

For instance, for some students who are used to the mandated structure of time at school, the flexibility of schedules at university might pose a problem in simply organizing time. The study skills support centre would provide guidance on effective methods of time management and provide some handy tools that could help in the effort.

Similarly, students who have been used to detailed teacher instructions at school might feel a little lost in connecting the dots between classroom lectures and the vast pool of readings for an assignment or tests. While tutorials provide some assistance, it might be a good idea to attend a session like 'Efficient study techniques' which could provide helpful hints on some deceptively difficult skills like how to write good lecture notes.

The stress of keeping up with all the changes and getting accustomed with life at university could be eased with some simple techniques taught in a session on stress management. Or for that matter, the confusion between short term priorities and long term commitments, such as the conflict between registering for more courses to gain extra credits and lesser courses to secure a better GPA, commonly results in confusion. A session on setting goals could help deal with these kinds of conflicts among many others.

Writing centres are another resource available at nearly all universities and are often underutilized by students. These centres may hold workshops outlining the fundamental principles of university writing but also are available for appointments where students can bring in any essay or paper they may be working on to discuss with a counsellor at the writing centre for positive criticism. It is very useful to use this resource for any assignment at university ahead of time, so as to accommodate for any corrections or follow up appointments that may be required.

Besides lectures and interactive workshops, most universities have academic success centres (the names may vary) where students can also get one-on-one counselling regarding these services. Some universities provide online modules that a student can benefit from at their own time and pace.

The services of these centres should be utilized without any hesitation as the skills and techniques that can be gained here are invaluable. With awareness, and proper usage of the resources made available by universities, all students can make academic success an achievable goal.
