Memco Supplies its Elite Elevator Safety Systems to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi
Light curtains to be fitted to doors of 74 elevators in Terminal 3

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, June 28, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Global elevator safety and communications specialist Memco's Elite elevator safety systems are to be installed in 74 elevators at Indira Gandhi International Airport's new Terminal 3 in New Delhi, India. The systems will be fitted to elevator doors supplied by ThyssenKrupp Elevator. Memco is a Halma company and is represented in India by TL Jones, also a Halma company.

Memco's Elite safety system features two independent detection systems. The first is a light curtain of infra-red beams criss-crossing the elevator car's doors; the second is a 3D proximity detection system in the landing zone. Any person or large object breaking the light curtain or detected within the 3D zone triggers a system which automatically reopens the elevator doors.

The combined system consists of a transmitter detector (TX) and receiver detector (RX) mounted on the car doors. Each housed in a robust profile only 9.8mm wide, they automatically sense door separation and adjust themselves for optimum performance. In many installations a separate controller is unnecessary and the detectors can be connected directly to the door controller or elevator operator.

The Elite features the latest software as standard, including power reduction and timeout features, and can be fitted to virtually any new or existing elevators. This versatility makes it one of the most competitive and easy to use elevator safety systems on the market (more information can be found here: http://www.memco.co.uk/en/elite/674.html).

Indira Gandhi International Airport is the busiest airport in South Asia by traffic movements and passenger volume. It serves as the primary civilian aviation hub for the region and in 2007 it handled 23 million passengers, with a planned expansion programme increasing its capacity to handle 100 million passengers by 2030.

The new Terminal 3 building, expected to cost US$ 2.6 billion, will have the capacity to handle an additional 33 million passengers annually by the start of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in October. On completion it will be the third largest terminal in the world, after Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 and Beijing International Airport's Terminal 3.

It will be a two-tier building, the bottom floor being the arrivals area and the top being a departures area. It will have 168 check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, 72 immigration counters and 15 X-ray screening areas, along with duty-free shops and other features. Over 90% of passengers passing through the airport are expected to use this terminal when completed.
