Cricket Australia Congratulates RTA SpeedBlitz Blues on becoming the First Team in the World to Qualify for 2009 Champions League Twenty20

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Monday, January 19, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Cricket Australia today congratulated RTA SpeedBlitz Blues - New South Wales - on becoming the first team in the world to formally qualify for the inaugural 2009 Champions League Twenty20.

The cricket world's premier club competition will take place between 8 October and 23 October 2009 and RTA SpeedBlitz Blues is guaranteed a spot in the 2009 Champions League Twenty20 after qualifying for this Saturday's (24 January) KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final.

The second Australian qualifier will be the winner of XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls or VB Victorian Bushrangers. The teams will battle for a place in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final on Wednesday at the Gabba in a fixture that will also determine which of the two moves through to join RTA SpeedBlitz Blues in 2009 Champions League Twenty20 in October.

As a founding member of the Champions League Twenty20, Australia is guaranteed two sides in the competition.

Cricket Australia's Acting Chief Executive Officer, Michael Brown, said: "This is a really exciting time to be involved in Interstate cricket in Australia. Cricket Australia sends its congratulations to the Blues on becoming not just the first Australian side to win the right to compete in the 2009 Champions League Twenty20 but also the first team worldwide to formally qualify for club cricket's premier event.

"Looking at the strength of the New South Wales squad and their performances this season, Cricket Australia expects them to put up a strong challenge for the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 title. The qualification later this week of either Queensland or Victoria will guarantee that Australian fans embrace the 2009 Champions League Twenty20 in October, safe in the knowledge that Australian sides should be there at the business end of this global tournament. Through ESPN Star Sport's excellent host-broadcast the whole world will be able to view the Australian Interstate talent on show in Champions League Twenty20."

RTA SpeedBlitz Blues captain, Simon Katich, said: "We're really excited to have qualified for this prestigious competition. Having played in the DLF Indian Premier League last year, I know how big the Champions League Twenty20 is going to be and how well we're going to have to play to win it. I believe New South Wales has a squad to rival those from around the world and given the experience many of our players have of Indian conditions, we expect to be challenging for the 2009 title. It's a great opportunity for some of our younger squad members to showcase their talents on the world stage.

"I believe that over the next few years this competition will truly become one of the big events in world cricket. Everyone in our changing rooms is genuinely excited by the prospect of playing in the Champions League Twenty20. We train and play together for 10 months a year and to have the opportunity to show off our team on the world stage in this international standard competition is something we're all really looking forward to."

The Governing Council of Champions League Twenty20 will announce more detail of the 2009 inaugural competition in the coming months.
