Themed "Towards Copenhagen: An Equitable and Ethical Approach", The Summit will be Inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh along with 4 Heads of States, UN Secretary General, Dignitaries, Nobel Laureates, and Ministers from Ten Countries

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Thursday, January 22, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) will be hosting its annual flagship event the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) 2009 from 5th - 7th Feb 2009 at the Hotel Ashoka, New Delhi. The summit will explore climate change issues and come up with a roadmap leading to a suitable agreement in Copenhagen. The Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh will be inaugurating the summit, along with head of states of four countries, UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, several dignitaries, Nobel Laureates, and ministers from over 10 countries namely Australia, Denmark, Finland, Indonesia, Japan, Mauritius, Mexico, Switzerland, UAE, and Africa.

In view of the importance of reaching a strong and effective global agreement on climate change at the Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen in 2009, the theme of DSDS 2009 is 'Towards Copenhagen: an equitable and ethical approach'. The summit would seek to reinforce the climate change agenda of the previous year and would sharpen the focus on the theme to arrive at a global consensus on climate change beyond 2012.

With Ministerial participation from over 10 countries, the summit assumes greater significance as it connects issues related to sustainable development with climate change, and hopes to encourage activities that need to be undertaken for sustainable development across the globe. The Sub-Themes for discussion at the summit are - Climate change challenge: Engaging all stakeholders for global consensus, Global finance and technology transfer, Adaptation to climate change impacts, Mitigating GHG emissions, Dealing with impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability: the challenge for Africa, Role of international organizations and the global community, Discussions on sustainable lifestyles and technologies, Imperatives of change process:---Bali---Poznan---Copenhagen, Review existing international process to frame post 2012 climate change regime.

TERI will organize the 2nd International Climate Change Exhibition (ICCE). Complementing the theme Sustainable Development and Climate Change, the exhibition will be inaugurated by Sh. Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce, Industry and Power. The ICCE focuses on the challenges, impacts, and existing initiatives for tackling the issues of climate change. The objective is to allow participants to showcase their climate change developmental projects and technologies to an international market and provide a momentum the solution-finding process to climate change.

The World CEO Forum 2009 - a curtain raiser to the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit on February 04, 2009 from 3.00 pm onwards will witness participation of thought leaders and top CEO's from across the globe. Over 100 corporate leaders and heads of Multi/Bi-lateral institutions and key officials from the government will congregate at the forum to discuss the issue of climate change in the context of impacts and opportunities for India Inc. It will delve into issues of tackling this global challenge by fostering partnerships and fast tracking business issues.

-- Africa day: A large ministerial delegation from Africa will participate in the summit. The session on Africa will help generate new thinking towards improving the quality of collective action and responses to adaptation and mitigation. Focus will be on global and regional cooperation and partnership on climate change

-- Young global leaders meet: University/college students from around the world will be in attendance to learn from leading global thinkers, Nobel laureates, heads of state/government, and business leaders about emerging climate change issues

-- Lighting a Billion Lives Campaign: TERI's LaBL (Lighting a Billion Lives) campaign aims to promote the use of solar devices through dissemination of solar torches and solar lanterns to households in villages without electricity. During the summit, TERI will be announcing the new Ambassador for this campaign

-- Sustainable Development Leadership Award: The Sustainable Development Leadership Award, instituted by TERI in 2005, is presented every year in recognition of significant contribution towards the cause of sustainable development. TERI will be announcing its Fifth Sustainable Development Leadership Award in next year's summit
