Local Sichuan Restaurant Group Adopts Cage Free Egg Policy


New Delhi, Delhi, India, Wednesday, March 17, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Hao Shi Nian Nian, a specialty Sichuan Restaurant with outlets in Gurgaon and New Delhi, has implemented a new cage-free egg procurement policy. Humane Society International praised Hao Shi Nian Nian for ending its use of eggs from hens confined in cruel battery cages.

The majority of egg-laying hens in India spend their lives crowded into battery cages so small, the birds can barely move more than a few inches or even stretch their wings. "Cage-free" eggs come from hens who can move about freely within a shed.

"By switching to cage-free eggs, Hao Shi Nian Nian has taken an important stand against battery cages - one of the most inhumane practices in agribusiness," said N.G.Jayasimha, HSI's campaign manager in India. "We applaud Hao Shi Nian Nian and hope other restaurants will follow its lead."

Recently, Crowne Plaza Today-Gurgaon also began procurement of cage-free eggs.

Facts

-- India's factory farms confine more than 200 million hens in barren battery cages so small, they can't even spread their wings. Extensive scientific research confirms this causes suffering.

-- Cage-free hens generally have two to three times more space per bird than caged hens. Cage-free hens may not be able to go outside and may have parts of their beaks cut off, but they can walk, spread their wings, and lay their eggs in nests-all behaviors permanently denied to hens crammed into battery cages.

-- In India, factory farms that confine more than 50,000 birds within a single shed are increasingly common.
