Senior Govt. Officials from Kenya Visit Amul


Anand, Gujarat, India, Tuesday, April 20, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- A four member delegation of senior officials lead by Mr. E. M. Irungu, Senior Dy. Secretary, Ministry of Co-operative Development and Marketing, Govt. of Kenya visited Amul Dairy and Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. on Monday, April 19, 2010 to understand the success story of dairy cooperative movement started at Amul, which is currently synonymous with White Revolution in the country.

The delegation comprised of Mr. Joram M. Gicheru, Sr. Assistant Commissioner, Mrs. Mary Mungai, Ministry of Co-operative Development and Marketing, and Mr. Geoffrey Bartenge, Head of Production, New Kenya Cooperative Creameries Ltd., Nairobi.

The group visited Amul Dairy plant and had wide ranging discussions with officials. They were briefed on the history of Amul and role played by its founder Chairman Shri Tribhuvandas Patel and Dr. V. Kurien, the father of the White Revolution on building this movement.

When asked on their experience and impression of the visit, the team leader Mr. E. M. Irungu said "We salute the achievements of Dr. Kurien in uplifting the quality of life of poor farmers. The Amul model is an inspiration to the cooperative movement in Kenya. We will strive to have the model replicated for our farmers in Kenya for poverty alleviation. Long live Amul. Long live Kenya" .

They also visited cattle feed factory, Kanajri, Amul Research and Development Association, Ode and Asia's most modern dairy plant, Mother Dairy, Gandhinagar, a unit of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. on Tuesday, April 20, 2010.
