Bangalore, Karnataka, India, Wednesday, June 09, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- Sybase Software (India) Pvt. Ltd. ("Sybase India"), the Indian subsidiary of Sybase Inc, (NYSE:SY), an industry leader in delivering enterprise and mobility software today announced that three of its customers have been recognized as Computerworld Honors laureates. ""IDG's Computerworld Honors Program highlights the important role information technology plays in improving our daily lives," said Sunil Jose, Managing Director, Sybase India & Sub-continent. "We are pleased that Sybase products are utilized to help organizations manage, analyze and deliver critical information anytime, anywhere. We congratulate ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd., Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IndianOil Corporation Ltd. for receiving this prestigious award."
"Each Laureate selected for this honor understands the importance of using one's resources and technical prowess to benefit one's fellow man," said Bob Carrigan, Chairman of the Computerworld Honors Program Chairmen's Committee and CEO of IDG Communications Worldwide.
The Computerworld Honors Program unites chairmen and CEOs of the world's foremost information technology companies to recognize the technology achievements of the most outstanding users each year.
This year, the laureates were presented their medallions at a special medal presentation ceremony at the 22nd Annual Laureate Medal Ceremony and Gala Awards Evening held on Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Following the presentation of medallions, an additional 50 finalists i.e. 5 laureates from each of the 10 categories were honored at the Gala Awards for their outstanding innovations in the field of information technology. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Ltd., Centre for Railway Information Systems ("CRIS") and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. ("Indian Oil") have been short listed as laureates in the Finance, Insurance & Real Estate, Transportation and Environment, Energy & Architecture categories respectively.
Case Studies detailing exceptional solutions utilizing Sybase technology will be formally inducted into the Program's International Archives i.e. these case studies will be available to the general public on-line.
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance revamped its information architecture by developing an active data warehouse that stores business information and ensures the integrity of the "single version of the truth" vision. To achieve this, Sybase ASE database platform handles real-time transaction processing and provides transformed data to Sybase IQ, the analytics database. The new system allows ICICI Prudential Life users to generate reports on a near real-time basis on current data. "With the help of the single view of customer information enabled through Sybase technology, ICICI Prudential Life can now help customers more effectively and efficiently, as now employees have immediate access to accurate and up-to-date information. This enhances up-sell and cross-sell activities as well as service capabilities of ICICI Prudential Life." said Chaya Pisupati, Sr. Vice President & Head IT, ICICI Prudential Life. "As for the channel management and sales organization, providing the correct information at the right time helps them make challenging decisions and perform sales jobs effectively. The sales reporting dashboard series powered by the warehouse allows us to aggregate data so that we can see how the company as a whole is performing and make sure we do whatever is necessary to ensure efficiency and accuracy in decision-making," said Dipak Nair, Vice President IT, ICICI Prudential Life.
For IndianOil Corporation Ltd, infrastructure is the backbone for meeting countrywide marketing operations and it continues to launch many customer centric initiatives. The customer service is backed by its network of over 5000 LPG distributors, more than 18000 gas stations serviced through 140 oil terminals, 88 LPG Bottling Plants and 98 Aviation Fuelling Stations. The organization caters to the needs of more than 5.5 Million LPG domestic customers and has close to 7800 Million footfalls at its gas stations. In addition, the organization is the largest supplier of fuel and lubricants for large organizations like defence services, railways, heavy industrial units, coal mines, state transport undertakings etc. To meet the market requirement, IndianOil handles a lot of information on an ongoing basis and therefore needs a way to essentially "crunch" the data it collects and bring meaning to the raw numbers and information.
Using Sybase IQ, Sybase's analytics technology, IndianOil built a central repository that allows its senior managers to view and analyze its data for making decisions. This central repository also allows IndianOil to manage its inventory based on sales history and product consumption and ensuring adequate supplies of cooking gas are available to those who need it. Moreover, IndianOil is able to gain an insight into its customer patterns and behavior enabling it to plan on supply and demand. "In today's information-driven world, collecting data is no longer enough. Companies need to be able to glean pertinent facts from that data in order to make solid business decisions, plan for the future and take care of its customers. With Sybase technology, IndianOil has achieved and exceeded these goals," said Mr Satwant Singh, Executive Director at IndianOil.
Indian Railways needs to update the arrival and departure times of 5,000 trains traveling through 9,000 stations across 42,000 miles of track. In order to allow the customer service representatives to respond quickly to customers' enquiries regarding train schedules over the phone or for the general public to access information from the website, CRIS has deployed five Sybase ASE servers across five geographical zones within the country. These ASE servers download data from a train charting application. Sybase Replication Server then allows these ASE servers to exchange information bi-directionally in real-time. In this way, each ASE server is able to process up-to-date information for all 5,000 trains.
"Sybase technology is ideal for our situation because of its flexibility to integrate with heterogeneous databases and its replication reliability. Our transactions per day can be as high as 1.2 million and our transactions per second can sometimes reach 60. Nonetheless, Sybase Replication Server handles these transactions efficiently and effectively," said Suneeti Goel, Senior Additional General Manager, CRIS. The CRIS solution has worked 24x7x365 for the past eight years and lends itself to future enhancements.
