TERI and CERT-UAE Sign MoU to Green the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region


New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, February 06, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Director General, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, signed an agreement with Dr Tayeb Kamali, Vice-Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), UAE (under the purview of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research), that paved the way for an extensive and wide-ranging partnership with the HCT's Center for Applied Research and Excellence (CERT) to further sustainable development in the UAE and across the MENA region.

This agreement sets up a collaborative offering of services in the fields of energy efficiency and conservation, environmental protection and conservation, renewable energy, green buildings, sustainable development of agriculture, biotechnology and other basic areas of human and sustainable development in the UAE and across the MENA region.

MENA is the acronym used for "Middle East and North Africa", region. It generally covers an extensive region, extending from Morocco in northwest Africa to Iran in southwest Asia. It generally includes all the Arab Middle East and North Africa countries, as well as Iran and Israel but not Turkey.

TERI's regional office will be based in Dubai Men's College and their services will be supported in all the emirates through the HCT campuses across the region. TERI, with its several hundred leading scientists, researchers, engineers and economists based in India and other countries, has agreed to assist CERT in developing indigenous capacity in its fields of expertise, so that such research and development work could be carried out in the long term by the citizens of the countries of this region.

While signing the agreement, Dr Kamali was extremely optimistic about the impact of establishing this partnership that would enable the UAE and the MENA region to become active players in the global movement towards sustainable development and -- encourage other countries in the region to follow suit, which he felt was the need of the hour, "This collaboration would not only bring state-of-the art solutions to the various sustainable development challenges faced by the developers in this region but would also, in the process, develop indigenous scientific and technological know-how among the new generation of local citizens to help them lead the sustainable development agenda in the future."
