Michael Phelps Wins the Best Male Athlete Award; Samuel L Jackson Hosted the Star Studded Ceremony

New Delhi, Delhi, India, Friday, July 24, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- STAR Sports will telecast the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards (ESPY), recognizing excellence in sports performance and achievements on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 1730 hrs IST. Hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson, the awards ceremony actually took place on Wednesday evening, July 15, at LA's Nokia Theatre. The repeat telecast of the award ceremony will be on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at 1500 hrs IST.

This year, Olympic champion Michael Phelps has ended Tiger Woods' 5-year reign as Best Male Athlete by swimming away with the 2009 title - in addition to Best Record-Breaking Performance, Best Championship Performance, and Best Male Olympian.

Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow won the 2009 Best College Athlete Award to become the only two-time winner in the category (he also won in 2008). Other winners named this year include Lebron James as Best NBA Player, Jimmie Johnson as Best Driver, and Larry Fitzgerald as Best NFL Player.

About the ESPYS

The ESPY Awards is an annual sports awards event created and broadcast by American cable television network ESPN. Begun in1993, the event confers eponymous awards, fully styled as Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, for individual and team athletic achievement and other sports-related performance during the calendar year preceding a given ceremony. Given the fact that the ESPYs are promotions of the sports network ESPN, and were named such that the acronyms are so similar, the awards are generally regarded as a celebration of the power of ESPN. As the similarly-styled Grammy (for music), Emmy (for television), and Academy Awards (for film), the ESPYs are hosted by a contemporary celebrity; the style, though, is more relaxed, light, and self-referential than that of many other awards shows, with comedic sketches usually included.

From their inception until 2004, the awards were chosen variously through voting by fans; sportswriters, broadcasters, sports executives, and sportspersons, collectively experts; or ESPN personalities. Award winners have been selected thereafter exclusively through online fan balloting conducted from amongst candidates selected by the ESPY Select Nominating Committee.
