(BW)(CONVERGYS)(CVG)Convergys Funds Mobile Computer Lab for Rural Women in Maharashtra

Pune, Maharashtra and India, Tuesday, February 03, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) --

Convergys Corporation, (NYSE: CVG), a global leader in relationship management, announced today it has funded a vocational computer training program for the women of Mavadi and Naigon villages of Maharashtra as part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program in India.

A group of dedicated volunteers from Convergys and MASUM set up a mobile computer lab that routinely travels to these villages to conduct computer training classes. The lab is fully equipped with computers and educational CDs.

In association with NGO MASUM (Mahila Sarvangen Utkarash Mandal), employees of Convergys are reaching out to spread computer literacy in the technologically challenged remote areas of the state. Convergys' commitment to improving the quality of life in communities where it has facilities around the globe is the driving force behind this community initiative, which Convergys launched in 2007.

The computer training program will make a remarkable difference in the lives of women in Mavadi and Naigon villages by helping them secure direct employment opportunities. MASUM has appointed a professional instructor to provide curriculum-led training to women appearing for the MS-CIT examination. Candidates who successfully complete the MS-CIT examinations receive government-approved certificates that qualify them for a wide variety of roles that demand computer skills. Convergys and MASUM inducted 90 women into the learning program in the first year.

"Through this initiative, we hope to bridge the digital divide in a small way," said Deepak Mathur, director and site leader of Convergys' operations in Pune. "Volunteer work also provides a unique learning experience for our employees."

Apart from training women, the program also reaches out to the schoolchildren of Naigaon and Pisarve villages to familiarize them with computer-based education. In addition to offering monetary support, Convergys volunteers are closely involved in making the learning programs both constructive and exciting. A team of Convergys employees led by Pune site leader Deepak Mathur visited Waghapur, one of the villages visited by the program, to conduct a Creativity Workshop for over 50 children in the village.

While Convergys is funding the mobile outfit and the teaching staff, MASUM ensures the day-to-day delivery of training.

In the future, Convergys employees plan to set up a library for schoolchildren up to class 12 and organize computer awareness workshops for young age groups and job fairs for students involving corporate participation.

"MASUM's association with Convergys has been very valuable in making a definite change in the lives of village youth, especially girls from poor families," said Dr. Ramesh Awasthi, founder of MASUM. "The computer training made available in remote villages is opening up new opportunities of employment for the rural youth. The computer-based education in two schools through interactive CDs is showing new avenues of using IT for making school education stimulating and interesting for school children that is quite different from their drab routine of reading from textbooks. We greatly cherish our relationship with Convergys and their highly motivated staff."
