ENM Launches Campaigntrack.in for General Election 09

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Monday, April 13, 2009 -- (Business Wire India) -- How much did your candidate spend on television ads? Which political party is getting more broadcast media coverage than others? Or interestingly, every day, which political leader manages to grab more air time than the others? Who is the hero of the day? Campaigntrack.in, a public service initiative of Esha, will give you all this and much more every day till the election campaign ends to see where and how much your party or candidate is in the media.

The results are based on minute to minute monitoring of the top 26 General news and business news channels and 6 General Entertainment Channels (GECs) across India, thirty channels in all. The critical analysis tracks election news and election advertising. The visibility of political leaders in the country and the ad spend of the parties are monitored across national channels.

Shilpa Pawar, director of Esha News Monitoring (ENM), said, "The initiative came about because of our conversations with senior journalists Mr. Shishir Joshi and Dr. Aloke Thakore who said that such monitoring would be an invaluable tool for journalists and the public alike."

The initiative is a tool for potential voters to keep an eye on the number of political ad campaigns running on the various channels apart from the issues which are being raised during these campaigns. The hottest issue of the day (which earned maximum airtime on all channels) would also be video enabled for the viewers.

"Such research is the first of its kind in India and marks the beginning of political communication research, which considering the increasing mediation of political campaigning in the country is needed to serve as a monitor of media skew and ad spend of parties," said Thakore, who along with Shishir Joshi provided the key research framework for campaigntrack.in.

The website, campaigntrack.in, will monitor 32 channels from the last 24 Hrs (as on mid-night) and the results would be on the site for all to see by 4:00pm every day till the election results are declared.

The results are a joint exercise between ENM, India's largest Television news monitoring agency and Shishir Joshi and Aloke Thakore who provided the research framework.

Key findings:

-- Highest news coverage political parties

-- Highest visibility- personality (Heroes and Zeroes of the day)

-- Total election coverage

-- Total Ad campaign on News channels

-- Total Ad campaign on entertainment channels
