2nd Annual Vinod Doshi Memorial Theatre Festival

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, Tuesday, March 23, 2010 -- (Business Wire India) -- A rare combination of technical brain and asthetic instincts, Vinod Doshi was an eminent industrialist and Chairman of The Premier Automobiles Ltd., now known as Premier Ltd.

He was closely associated with and headed many national business bodies such as CII, IMTMA, SIAM, ARAI, MEDC etc., educational institutions and many other Government and Semi-Government organisations. Vinod Doshi played a pivotal role in contributing to the industrial and economic growth of the country.

He had a deep passion for amateur theatre and experimental cinema. His wife, Dr. Saryu Doshi is a noted art historian and always complimented her passions with her husband's interests. Vinod Doshi was deeply involved in all its aspects of theatre - sound effects, lighting, rehearsals, play readings (many of which were held at their home), translation, acting, and of course, post - show parties. His close interaction with playwrights, actors, directors and technicians invigorated him. However, with increasing corporate responsibilities, his involvement in theatre gradually lessened over time.

To celebrate his passion for theatre, Premier Ltd. has commissioned an annual, 5 day theatre festival in his memory, called the Vinod Doshi Smruti Natya Mahotsav. The festival, will be held at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, Mumbai and Yeshwantrao Chavan Natya Sabhagruha, Kothrud, Pune from 22nd-26th March, '10.

The festival dedicated to theatre and performance, presents an opportunity for the Mumbaikars and Puneites to see the work in the field of theatre across languages and across regions of our country. The audience will be able to connect with the rich practice of the established directors, view aspirational work of young directors and actors and engage in energetic debate about new ways of approaching theatre and about reinvention of traditional forms and up turnings of given performance languages.

The festival will host 5 highly appreciated plays of our country (combination of a young and established genre of theatre) in Mumbai and Pune.

SYNOPSIS

S*x, M*rality & Cens*rship
Director : Sunil Shanbag | Developed by : Shanta Gokhale and Iravati Karnik

S*X, M*RALITY, AND CENS*RSHIP is a seduction of ideas exploring one of the most controversial issues of our time morality and censorship. The play flashes back to the early '70s when Vijay Tendulkar's classic, Sakharam Binder, set off a storm of controversy in the theatre scene. The stage censor board came down heavily on the script, and the play was attacked by sections of society. The unusual story of Sakharam Binder, the parallel world of tamasha, and the amazing spirit of '70s all make up an exciting mix of theatre, memory, live music, dance and video. The show provokes, challenges, entertains, and asks the question who says NO!? and why?

Katkon Trikon
Director : Girish Joshi | Writer : Dr. Vivek Bele

An experimental play from the repertoire of 'Maharashtra Cultural Centre' that deals with a modern social problem. The universal predicament of the 'generation gap' is handled in a novel manner.

The play documents the happenings in the life of a small family comprising a retired father, a lawyer son and a daughter-in-law who is a professor of mathematics. As is won't, there are problems and discordant notes between the father and daughter-in-law.

Dr. Vivek Bele in his unusual way throws light on the relations between members of a joint family and need of a lonely elderly person craving for love, concern and communication.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (Musical Play)
Director : Ravindra Khare | Writer : Purushottam Dharvekar

This play is a jewel of a musical, is a melodious duel between bitter pride and rivalry between two Sangeet Gharanas (Schools in Indian Classical Music). The play exhibits the relationship between the Master (Guru) and the Disciple (Shishya), expressed in the tussle between two musical paths in Indian Classical Music through the medium of music and power packed dialogues.

Pt. Bhanushankarji and Khansaheb Aftab Husein, great pillars of their own musical gharanas (Musical Schools), are the artists of great heights in their own right. After 10 years of constant efforts, Khansaheb defeats Panditji ,invincible till then, and becomes Singer of the Royal Court. A young student - Sadashiv, claiming to have gained some knowledge from Panditji happens to beg Khansaheb to accept him as his student. But stubborn royalty to the gharana of music, prevents this from happening . How Sadashiv, with the help of Uma and Zarina, daughters of Panditji and Khansaheb, achieves his goal to get Mastery in music is very aptly shown in the play. The lyrics of this poetic and musical plot, meaningfully convey the emotional turmoil in this poignant situation.
